Child obesity in America, to which extent? 0

Jul19

The rising problem of obesity seems to worry not only the adult population, but most of all, American children. The percentage of obese children is really worrying: about nine million kids are concerned, that is to say 12% of them are obese. Many people do not worry when one of their children is overweight or obese, as they think this is only a transitory state that will go away with the passing of time. What they do not know instead, is that an obese child, aged between 5 and 9, has a very high probability to remain obese once he or she is an adult.

The percentage of obese children has been more and more increasing due to different reasons. The growth of fast foods has not been a good help to fight this problem, as children tend to eat very sweet and salty food. Hamburgers and creamy ice-creams are what children choose for their favourite meal, instead of what it could be healthy for them: vegetables, rice, fruit…all kinds of food that are apparently detested by any child.

Childhood obesity is a real issue

But this problem does not come out only from a bad alimentation as American children seem not only to eat bad, but most of all they do not practice any physical activity at all or, in a few cases ,very seldom.

Bad alimentation and lack of movement and sport are, of course, the two factors that lead to a high percentage of obesity among American children.

Fighting childhood obesity is hard, but before telling children how they should behave and what they should eat, American institutions are more concerned to make aware and educate parents who should be the first to follow a good alimentation and good sport habits. The influence that parents have on their children is enormous and that is why the first step is expected from them.

From the age of 6, children with a regular physical activity are less likely to get overweight and having physical problem when they are adults.

It is not necessary to panic when children tend to get fat. A sport that they like ,will surely half the damage, but this could not be enough. Making them understand that eating fruit and vegetables is surely very important, but not to get very strict as well: children have to like what they eat, and forcing them to eat only vegetables is not the way it works.

Fast food and obesity, how are they related? 0

Our era is characterized by quickness and people, most of all when they work, prefer to buy their food from a fast food. The food that we buy from a fast food is not as healty as the home made one. It is understandable though, that people like to save their time when they work and they cannot be bothered preparing food after a long working day. If saving time is an advantage that people have, by eating in a fast food, eating fat and not fresh food is surely a disadvantage.

Fast Food

Sandwiches with any kind of sauce, hamburgers, chocolates, ice creams and cakes strike people’s attention, who cannot resist from buying them. And what about fried food: that is the worst for someone who is trying to lose some weight. The problem comes up with drinks as well: everybody knows that drinking water is healthy for our body, on the contrary people cannot help buying a coke with a hamburger which seems a lot more tasty than a simple bottle of water. It is not surprising that fast food is strictly linked to obesity problems not only among adults but among children too. Children prefer hamburgers and cakes to an healthy soup of legumes. And when a saucy hamburger with a fanstastic and attractive toy is offered to them, it is really clear that they cannot resist to force their parents to buy them “their favourite meal”. Much funnier but less healthy: the childhood obesity statistics show that 16% of children, aged between 9 and 16, are obese or overweight.

The problem is that the food, prepared in a fast food, does not contain as many proteins as the one that mothers make at home. And if eating in a fast food becomes an habitude, it could accelerate the obesity process in anyone, not only in children. Surely, nobody will ban fast food, as eating it once in a while will not affect anybody’s health, but those who go quite often should really be careful about what they eat.

At least, these people should try to have a regular physical activity in order to regulate their system and avoid an excessive fat accumulation.

Of course, not eating in a fast food does not necessarily mean losing weight. Fast foods are one of many reasons for which people get overweight, but not the only one. The best way to avoid it is matching a less fat diet with some sports, that is the most productive help to reduce fat in our body
